A Sure Start Maternity Grant is a one-off payment to help with the cost of things for a new baby.
You should be entitled to it if you or your partner recieve:
Income Support, Universal Credit, Employment Support Allowance Income Related, Income-Based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Working Tax Credit (Must Include A Disability Element) or Child Tax Credit (Must Include More Than The Basic Family Element)
If YES to one, claim a Sure Start Maternity Grant.
We use partner to mean a person you are married to or a person you are living with as if you are married to them.
You do not have to pay a Sure Start Maternity Grant back.
You can claim from 11 weeks before the week your baby is due, until 3 months after the baby is born.
If you are adopting, your baby must be aged under 12 months. You should claim within 3 months of adopting.
A Sure Start Maternity Grant should be £500.
NOTE: From Januray 2011 you only get this £500 grant for your first child or only child under 16 in the household due to benefit cuts.
