Scottish Carer Allowance Supplement

CARER'S ALLOWANCE SUPPLEMENT

You must be receiving Carerís Allowance to qualify for the Carerís Allowance Supplement. If you only have underlying entitlement to Carerís Allowance, or you get a carer element in your Universal Credit but do not get Carerís Allowance itself, you are not eligible for the Carerís Allowance Supplement.

If you get a carer element in your Universal Credit you should claim Carerís Allowance in order to get a Carerís Allowance Supplement (subject to being in receipt of Carerís Allowance on the qualifying date). However, if your earnings are too high to get Carerís Allowance, then you cannot do this.

Find out†more about Carer's Allowance on gov.uk.

Payment is made to anyone receiving Carerís Allowance on the qualifying date. The qualifying dates and amounts for 2020 are:

  • 13†April 2020; £230.10†(paid June 2020)

  • 12†October 2020; £230.10†(paid December 2020)

You only have to be receiving Carerís Allowance on the qualifying date to get the Carerís Allowance Supplement Ė ie, you do not have to get Carerís Allowance for the whole six-month period that the supplement covers. The full supplement will still be paid. On the other hand, if you get Carerís Allowance for most of the six-month period, but not on the qualifying date, you will get no Carerís Allowance Supplement for that period.

If you do not get Carerís Allowance on the qualifying date, but are later awarded Carerís Allowance which is backdated to cover that date, you can get the Carerís Allowance Supplement for that period.

Note that the Carer's Allowance Supplement is disregarded for means-tested benefits and Tax Credits. The additional payments will therefore not reduce other benefits that you receive.
